Career Center Resources

The mission of the Next Generation in Trucking Association is to promote trucking as a positive career field; to create and partner with career technical education (CTE) programs at secondary and postsecondary institutions; and encourage the training of young people in the trucking industry by connecting them to training and employment opportunities. FMCSA established the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program (SDAP) to meet requirements set forth by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).

This three-year program will help individuals ages 18, 19, and 20 explore interstate trucking careers and help trucking companies hire and train new drivers through an apprenticeship pilot program.

Attend Truck Driving School with an Eligible Training Provider

California's Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL) was established in compliance with the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998 and amended by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) of 2014 to provide customer-focused employment training resources for adults and dislocated workers. Individuals interested in becoming a truck driver may qualify to receive funding to attend a truck driving school that is on the Eligible Training Provider List.

Troops to Trucks - Military Waiver Program for CDL Driving Test

Through the Troops to Trucks program, the DMV is making it easier for personnel trained by the military in the operation of heavy vehicles to obtain a civilian commercial driver license (CDL). A commercial driver's license is required in California to operate large trucks and buses.

The Troops to Trucks program allows the DMV to waive the CDL driving test for qualified military service members who are or were employed within the last year, in a military position requiring the operation of a military motor vehicle equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle on public roads and highways.
